WE TRANSFORM PORK BY-PRODUCTS INTO HIGH-VALUE PHARMACEUTICALS.

OLOT MEATS GROUP’s entry into the pharmaceutical sector enables us to transform porcine intestinal mucosa into a biotechnology product with a significant impact on global healthcare: heparin.

Low Molecular Weight Heparin (LMWH) is an essential anticoagulant used to prevent and treat thromboembolic disease, one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide.

This medicine plays a vital role in a wide range of clinical applications, including the prevention of thrombosis following surgery, the treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, and the protection of patients at high cardiovascular risk.

LMWH is also widely used in hospitalized patients, oncology treatments, selected pregnancies, and numerous medical procedures where preventing blood clot formation is critical to improving outcomes and saving lives.

OLOT MEATS GROUP’s commitment to human health is based on transforming a by-product of the food industry into a medicine with high therapeutic value, helping to improve the availability of heparin while meeting the highest healthcare standards. This approach not only strengthens healthcare systems but also enhances the security of supply of a medicine considered strategically important worldwide. Manufactured under stringent pharmaceutical quality standards and supported by full traceability—from the origin of the raw material to the finished product—the process ensures a safe, effective medicine that complies with the most demanding international regulatory requirements.

The Glicopepton Biotech project is located on a 25,000 m² site in Fraga (Huesca, Spain). It combines the expertise of Laboratorios Farmacéuticos Rovi with the industrial synergies between Costa Food Group and Càrniques Celrà, S.L., a company belonging to OLOT MEATS GROUP.

This collaboration brings together scientific knowledge, industrial capabilities, and extensive experience in the agri-food sector to drive an initiative that connects innovation, sustainability, and public health. At the same time, the project strengthens the region’s position as a hub for applied biotechnology, creating highly skilled employment opportunities and reinforcing the industrial ecosystem linked to pharmaceutical research.

The research and development platform created for this project also enables the full valorisation of all materials generated during the production process, promoting a comprehensive resource-efficiency model. These by-products can be used to produce high-nutritional-value animal feed or non-chemical organic fertilisers, supporting the principles of the circular economy while reducing environmental impact.

In this way, the project not only advances pharmaceutical innovation but also promotes responsible and sustainable production, ensuring that every stage of the process creates value and contributes—directly or indirectly—to human health, environmental sustainability, and global well-being.
